9/22/20242 min read

This past Saturday, STRIVE Skills Academy hosted an engaging introductory class on concrete forming, pouring, cutting, drilling, and finishing techniques. Led by our experienced instructor, the session provided a focused, hands-on learning experience, ideal for those looking to gain foundational skills in concrete work.
A Day of Practical Learning
The day started with a safety briefing, followed by an introduction to the tools and equipment participants would be using throughout the class. With just one instructor, each participant received personalized attention, ensuring they felt confident using tools like trowels, saws, and drills before jumping into the hands-on projects.
Our instructor introduced the participants to different types of concrete mixes, explaining when and how to use standard, high-strength, and quick-setting concrete for various applications. This knowledge laid the groundwork for the practical exercises to follow.
Reinforcing Concrete: Rebar, Wire Mesh, and More
A crucial part of the class was learning how to reinforce concrete. The instructor demonstrated the use of rebar and wire mesh to strengthen concrete for larger or load-bearing projects. Participants got to install these reinforcements themselves, gaining a better understanding of how to build concrete structures that stand the test of time.
Forming, Pouring, and Finishing Techniques
Participants worked on two hands-on projects: a small take-home paver and a 4'x2' slab. Under the close guidance of the instructor, they learned how to set up forms correctly, ensuring everything was level and reinforced properly.
The excitement built as the concrete was mixed and poured. Participants took part in spreading and leveling the concrete, followed by practicing finishing techniques. From smooth trowel finishes to textured broom finishes, they explored different methods for achieving professional-looking results.
Cutting and Drilling Techniques
In the latter part of the session, participants learned the fundamentals of cutting and drilling concrete. With the instructor’s guidance, they used saws and drills to cut and modify the concrete projects, gaining practical skills that are useful for home and DIY projects.
Creating a Take-Home Paver
One of the highlights of the class was the chance to create a personalized concrete paver. Participants molded, poured, and finished their own paver, applying all the techniques they had learned. Once cured, these pavers will be ready for pick-up, serving as a lasting reminder of their hands-on learning experience.
Looking Ahead
The Concrete Basics class provided participants with the essential skills needed for working with concrete, from forming and pouring to finishing and reinforcement. By the end of the session, everyone left with newfound confidence in their abilities to handle concrete projects.
